RAE Exam 2007-2

Last year, 28/11/2007, I sat for the Radio Amateur Exam (RAE) at UiTM, Merbok, Kedah. It is an exam which held by Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commision (MCMC) for those who wants to become a radio amateur or hams. So I took the exam and paid for RM50.

Several months before the exam, I attended the preparation class. 8 lessons, 3 hours for each lesson and I am ready for the big time.

Usually in sort of exam, most of our parents will be taking us to there. However, I was not so lucky. Both my parents cant took me there as they need to work. So I have to car pool. A classmate offered us a ride for me and my friend, Jia Pheng. We eventually accepted.

So about 10a.m., I was ready and sat Rapid to the Gelugor bus stand. After a short period of half an hour, we were ready and blast-off Penang. Soon we were sitting in a Proton Wira, moving at 110km/h. You can feel the car is shattering. The parts seem going to break off.

Luckily, after a 50 minutes ride on the highway, we arrive the destination. But first, we have to take our lunch. I had a quite bad impression of Kedah. It was just like a cowboy town. Tonnes of dust was flying in the sky at anytime. Than another issue, fly. These bloody irritaing insects just annoying us. We can't really concentrate to have our lunch.

No matter how, we manage to finish the lunch. We head straight to UiTM. It is really a big campus. Luckily we didn't get lost and we found the exam hall. The hall can fit in about 100 people. As usual, no handphone and not a single conversation.

I am really nervous about the exam. This is the 1st time I sat for it. Honestly, in such a situation, you only can pray to God to reduce the tension. The examiner reads out loud what are the dos and don'ts. Each candidate was given a question booklet, a piece of blank A4 paper and answering sheet.

The exam starts. and we were given green light to answer the question. The paper consists of 100 objective question - 20 questions about rules and regulation, 30 questions about operating procedure and 50 question about technical stuff.

I was having a good time when answering the question. Sadly, I had forgotten some of the technical stuff. We were given 3 hours to finish the paper. The first hour you have to been in the hall. The following second and thrid hour was kind of like extra time. If you can't finish it in 1 hour, you still get plentyfull of 2 hours t go. I finish my paper in 1 hour and 20 minutes. For your information, you can't bring the exam paper out of the hall. It is just same as the Living Skills paper in the PMR exam. The question is almost identical every year as they were picked from a question pool.

The time was 4.00pm. Some people even bring radios, antenna, wires and etc. to be sold at there. Many people was attraced. We had a short rest at the cafeteria while waiting for the others to come out. Most of them was saying the exam is quite tough.

It is the time for us to back to Penang. This time, me and Jia Pheng were sitting in another car back to Penang. We sat in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck which had me, Jia Pheng and another 3 middle-age men.

The traffic was not so terrible afterall. We stuck at the Penang Bridge for 10 minutes and that is the traffic jam I had encounter all the day. I arrive home at 6.00pm. I had a bath and had my dinner with my family. All was going well.

After 2 months, I received a letter from MCMC. I passed the RAE. I am quite happy as I no need to sit for the exam again and pay another innocent RM50. I think that's quite a happy ending, is it ?
